Shawn Layden Says ‘We’ve Plateaued On Tech,’ Feels Hardware Makers Should ‘Make It Cheaper And Simpler’
Shawn Layden, ex-Chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, has suggested that hardware companies have now plateaued in regards to technical capabilities, and has said that going forward he would like to see console makers adopt a cheaper and simper route.
I think we’ve plateaued on the tech, frankly. How many of us can really tell the difference between 90 frames per second and 120 frames per second? Make it cheaper and simpler. Let’s do that instead. And let’s find a way to have more hardware companies participate.

Layden touched on a number of topics during the GI.biz interview, including Xbox’s current strategy, which he says gives him flashbacks to the Dreamcast era. In addition, the former PlayStation executive stated that the cost of video games should have been gradually raised with each console generation, and has described subscription models as Game Pass as a ‘danger.’
Layden was a veteran of PlayStation for more than 30 years and decided to leave the console manufacturer just ahead of the PS5 launch. Speaking in an interview earlier this year, Layden admitted that part of the reason he left Sony was due to the consoles then-pivot to live service games.
