Sami Zayn Says He Knows Something Roman Reigns Won’t Admit

Sami Zayn believes Roman Reigns is dealing with something he might not be willing to admit heading into WWE Crown Jewel.
The Undisputed WWE Champion is preparing to face Reigns in a Champion vs. Champion showdown at Saturday’s premium live event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. With tensions continuing to rise between the two, Zayn believes even someone as accomplished as “The Original Tribal Chief” has doubts about his chances of winning.
During an interview with Cathy Kelley for WWE’s Crown Jewel Countdown show, Zayn explained why he doesn’t believe Reigns is as confident as he portrays himself to be.
“Roman can say he’s 100% sure. I know there’s that self-doubt because he’s human. He’s human. I don’t care if you’re The Tribal Chief. I don’t care how much success you’ve had. You’re still a human being. You cannot tell me that you’re going into the ring with a WWE champion and there’s zero self-doubt. I know there’s self-doubt there. He can play it however he wants. I don’t care. I know there’s self-doubt. I’ll tell you- I am telling you there’s self-doubt.”
While Zayn is convinced that Reigns has some uncertainty heading into their match, he also acknowledged his own confidence is at an all-time high.
“But there’s also a crazy amount of confidence, and I’m operating at a higher level now than I ever have been. So yes, absolutely, I think I can beat him.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Zayn discussed his level of self-awareness as Undisputed WWE Champion, admitting that his intelligence, emotional sensitivity and personal beliefs can sometimes make life more difficult.
“It’s a gift and a curse, and I myself have been blessed or cursed, depending on how you look at it, with a high intellect, a high emotional sensitivity, and a very strong sense of morality, and that is a recipe for disaster. It is very hard to get through the day sometimes when you are a little bit too smart for your own good and you feel a little too strong and you’re too aware of your surroundings, and I sometimes envy some of these other WWE superstars, other people actually, that can just look through life so blissfully unaware.”
Zayn went on to explain that those same characteristics have also played a major role in helping him reach the top of WWE, despite not fitting the traditional mold of a world champion.
“I’m almost jealous that they don’t have to carry that same load… but I carry it because it is what it is. Again, it’s a curse in some ways. But I also think it’s a gift because it’s one of the only explanations for how a guy who looks like me, who talks like me, who acts like me, who thinks like me, who believes in what he believes in the way I do, ends up with this championship. Because it doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t make sense. But those are the intangibles that have led me Those are part of the qualities that I possess that no one else in that locker room possesses, and that’s why I’m the champion. So again, gift and a curse, you know? Gift and a curse.”
