NINTENDO
Multiple never-before-seen prototypes are on display at the Nintendo Museum
The Nintendo Museum is now up-and-running in Japan, and thousands have been inside to see everything and anything Nintendo has on display. That includes a deep look at their history of released products, and surprisingly, it also pulls back the curtain on some unreleased prototypes.
FarmboyinJapan was one of the many to stop in the Nintendo Museum, and they made an incredibly thorough list of all the prototypes spotted while visiting. While FarmboyinJapan doesn’t have pictures of these prototypes, you can see the full breakdown of what’s on display below.
- Prototype Super Famicom with red buttons
- Ultra 64 controller prototypes (one with a thumbstick made out of a shiny metal material and another that only had a center grip)
- Prototype GameCube with a greenish blue color while being slightly transparent
- Prototype GameCube controller with much longer grips, one of them being clear plastic
- Prototype Wii Remotes (same as the ones seen here)
- Prototype controller that appeared to be an early design of the Wii Classic Controller (could be mounted to the Wii Remote with the Wii Remote going in the middle of the Classic Controller)
- Prototype Wii U GamePad
- Prototype Virtual Boy headset made out of clear plastic
- Multiple Game Boy prototypes, with the earliest being black with red buttons and a layout similar to the original GBA
- Prototype GBA prototype that was built for one-handed play (size of a standard GBA Micro, uses a vertical layout, featured a tiny d-pad, scroll wheel, and buttons
- Prototype DS that opened horizontally, with d-pads and buttons on either side
