PS6 Frame Generation Is Looking Likely As Sony Researches AI Frame Interpolation For ‘Next-Generation PlayStation Platform’

The LinkedIn profile for a senior research scientist at Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed the format holder is looking to bring frame generation to the PS6 through PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).
Ayan Kumar Bhunia has been with Sony since December 2023 and his work involves “leading research efforts to elevate real-time visual quality for PlayStation experiences — spanning video frame interpolation, super-resolution, and generative models.” For the uninitiated, frame interpolation is a tech that enables AMD and Nvidia graphics cards to use AI models to generate frames to place between the actual frames in a game.
Even more telling is the fact that a major part of his work at Sony has been “core research behind the frame interpolation pipeline for the next generation PlayStation platforms,” which has resulted in two patents being filed.
The tools and methods used by Bhunia to achieve this include CUDA and Tensor TR — both of which are Nvidia technologies — which is interesting as the PS6 is heavily rumoured to be powered by AMD tech. This may only be used as research however, with the actual methods for achieving frame interpolation methods coming from AMD.
There’s been heaps of chatter about the PS6 dating back about two years now, although Sony continues to remain tight-lipped about its next-generation console plans. Most recently, it was claimed by hardware tipster Moore’s Law Is Dead that the PS6 will be backwards compatible with PS4 and PS5 games, while leaker Kepler_L2 chimed in with news of his own, stating that PS5 successor is unlikely to receive a ‘lite’ model as it would be a ‘nightmare’ for developers.
Kepler_L2 also recently stated Sony could flog the PS6 for $699.99, although in terms of specifications, this would likely not include a disc drive and would only offer a 1TB SSD. The PS6 is heavily rumoured to be launching in late 2027, but we’ll have to wait for Sony to finally break its silence to get any official details.
