The Outer Worlds 2 Director Says ‘You Don’t Outsource The Things You’re Good At To AI’

Brandon Adler, the director on The Outer Worlds 2, has touched base on the use of AI in development during a chinwag on the My Perfect Console podcast, believing you shouldn’t “outsource things you’re good at to AI.”

In regards to Obsidian Entertainment, Adler stated that while working on the sci-fi sequel he realised “Obsidian should never outsource the things that it’s amazing at, like our quests and our characters and our stories — those are the things we should keep internal.”

While Obsidian doesn’t have a mandate in regards to the application of generative AI in game development, Adler emphatically stated the team “definitely do not use it for content creation as “that’s just not really even on the table.” On a more personal note, he said he occasionally asks AI for meeting summaries or assistance with research, but nothing on a more broader level.

You focus [on] those, you put the human element, you put the storytelling you want to put into that. And, I think, as long as we keep that moving forward, we’ll probably be okay.

This isn’t the first time that Obsidian has touched on the use of AI in game development. Earlier this month, Josh Sawyer, Kate Dollarhyde, and Leonard Boyarsky told GameFile that the team doesn’t use generative AI for its writing. “We haven’t been using it at all,” stated Boyarksy.

While we’re on the subject of AI, there’s been a few developments with companies recently highlighting the technology. For example, Square Enix said that it is aiming for the bulk of its QA and debugging to be carried out by AI in the next two years, while Krafton looks to transition to an ‘AI first company’ with the launch of a voluntary resignation program for its staff.
