Cory Barlog Says Sony Santa Monica Is Working On A New IP Described As ‘Technically Ambitious’

Sony Santa Monica Studio Creative Director, Cory Barlog, has revealed the God of War creator is working on ‘technically ambitious’ new IP, which the company has been working on for a number of years.

I’d like to share a little bit about our new project. I’m incredibly proud of what the team at Santa Monica Studio has been accomplishing. It’s a technically ambitious project, something that’s not easy to achieve. This is a new IP we’ve been working on for years, and if all goes well, we’re planning to show it to you later this year. I couldn’t be more excited.

No further details were revealed on the project, but there’s a good chance that this isn’t the only game that Sony Santa Monica is working on. Back in September last year, the LinkedIn profile for a senior manager at the developer stated that Santa Monica Studio was involved in ‘several’ unannounced projects across two teams.

Fast forward to May of this year, and Sony posted a series of job openings for an unannounced project, which includes roles in a variety of areas including Programming, Senior Tools, Animation, and Design.

Sony Santa Monica Studio’s latest project was 2022’s God of War Ragnarok, which was released for PS4 and PS5. The studio celebrated the series’ 20th anniversary earlier this year, during which time it released a free content update for Ragnarok that included new skins and other goodies.
