Play The Last Of Us Part II Remastered In Chronological Order With A Free Update Out On PS5 & PC Today

Naughty Dog has announced the release of a free update for The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PS5 and PC, which allows you to play through the critically acclaimed sequel chronologically.

The Chronological mode offers “even deeper insight” into the game’s narrative, and allows players to witness how close Abby and Ellie come to bumping into each other as their adventures crisscross throughout Seattle. Naughty Dog worked with Nixxes to ensure that the Chronological mode runs “as smooth as possible,” noting it wasn’t an easy feat to bring the story of The Last of Us Part II together in such a fashion.

However, the development team recommends that newcomers still play The Last of Us Part II Remastered in its original incarnation before tackling the Chronological mode. New Trophies have also been added, as well as new outfits that allow Joel and Tommy to dress up as Uncharted’s Nathan and Sam, respectively in No Return.

The original version of The Last of Us Part II jumps between various sequences to tell its narrative in a non-linear order, and makes particular use of flashbacks, especially concerning the relationship between Joel and Ellie. At one point, players assume control of Abby for a lengthy period of time before regaining control of Ellie once more.

The game takes place a few years after the events of The Last of Us, with Ellie now 19-years-old, as she embarks on a brutal mission of revenge against a new group of survivors lead by newcomer Abby Anderson. Both characters are playable in the game allowing fans to experience two sides of the story, with Abby and Ellie clashing with various enemies along the way, including infected and a group known as the Scars.
