Fan-made Zelda: Breath of the Wild DS demake finds its way onto AliExpress

The internet is a weird, wild and sometimes wonderful place. You never know what you’re going to find depending on where you spend your time, and in the case of AliExpress shoppers, their online widow-browsing could have taken them to one heck of an interesting discovery.

The video above shows of a Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild demake for the Nintendo DS. It’s nowhere near the full version of Breath of the Wild, but it’s definitely impressive for what it is, even if the demo just has you wandering around a mostly empty landscape. Even more odd, this demake can be purchased on AliExpress, and it comes crammed onto a DS flashcard.

As soon as the demake was spotted, the internet did its thing and spun up all sorts of lore about the project. This eventually led to the idea that the demake was the brainchild of a mysterious Chinese developer looking to steal some of Nintendo’s thunder, but that’s not the case at all. We know that thanks to the actual developer stepping forward.

The Breath of the Wild demake comes from Ermelber, a developer who worked with a group of friends several years ago to piece together the project. In actuality, this Breath of the Wild DS experiment was a way for the team to test out a terrain engine they were toying with. In other words, it’s just a fun oddity that somehow made its way online only to be scooped up by opportunists, crammed into a DS flashcard and put on AliExpress for a quick buck.
