Koei Tecmo’s Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy & the Liberator of Polar Night has surpassed $50 million in gross revenue, according to data from AppMagic.

The title first released in Japan on September 23rd, 2023 and later landed worldwide on January 25th, 2024. This gave the Japanese market a headstart in consumer spending and it’s a lead which has only persisted.

The country has contributed $45.9 million of Atelier Resleriana’s total revenue to date. That equates to 91% of all player spending in the adventure RPG.

Meanwhile, Taiwan and the US comprise Atelier Resleriana’s second and third-biggest markets with contributions of $1.5 million and $1.2 million respectively, or approximately 3% each.

Fueled by fan favourites

Atelier Resleriana’s revenue has fluctuated over the past 10 months with many peaks attributable to new gacha characters, followed by declines during the spaces between new banners. It’s a pattern observable across many gachas including Kuro Games’ recent hit Wuthering Waves, which had its most lucrative day to date on mobile upon the release of Yinlin.

In the case of Atelier Resleriana, Koei Tecmo has the advantage of a 27-year-old franchise to draw characters from, and clearly understands who the fan favourites are. The game kickstarted with a banner featuring new heroine Resna alongside past series protagonists Marie, Judith and Ryza, the latter also being the heroine of the best-selling Atelier series: Atelier Ryza.

Ryza has taken the series to new heights since her 2019 multiplatform game and even spawned an anime last year, making her the obvious candidate for a gacha banner during Atelier Resleriana’s debut. The banner was later rerun for the global release this January, giving Western players the chance to obtain the popular alchemist.

Resleriana’s best day for revenue so far was actually October 10th, earning $1.1 million on the day of the Chapter 4 update and a new banner featuring an original character in Valeria and another fan-favourite in Klaudia. Between their limited-time exclusivity and Klaudia also originating from Atelier Ryza, this revenue peak is easily understood.

Revenue has steadily declined since then however, spiking with certain banners more than others but down overall from 2023. From $14.2 million during October last year – its most lucrative month yet – to $1.4 million at its lowest in May 2024, evidently the global launch hasn’t sustained Atelier Resleriana’s success.

The decline also tracks with a general fall in spending across RPGs, so much so that the genre has just fallen to second place on the market for the first time since “at least” 2017.

Even so, $50.2 million to date can hardly be sneezed at, and Atelier Resleriana is fast approaching its first anniversary in Japan; gachas are known to celebrate their birthdays in style and encourage plenty of spending, so perhaps another boost is on the horizon…
