Capcom Responds To Dragon’s Dogma 2 Microtransactions Complaints, Apologizes For Having Entirely Optional Purchases Available

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is officially out, after years of fans not even knowing if they would get a sequel. Not only is it real, it’s here, and it’s an excellent game, that any fan of the original or fantasy adventure fans shouldn’t miss.

It’s launch however has been soured for players who seem to believe the game has been ruined because Capcom is offering a slew of microtransactions for things like more in-game currency, or fast traveling.

The Steam reviews page for Dragon’s Dogma 2 laments the microtransactions, with one user saying “Look how they massacred my boy turned him into a cash grab.”

In response, Capcom has put out a statement on the Steam’s community page for the game, saying “we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience.”

It’s true that the wave of microtransactions everywhere in games is always disappointing for players, who don’t want to feel like they’re being nickle and dime’d, especially when they’re paying full price for a game.

The outcry against these microtransactions for Dragon’s Dogma 2 however seems to be ill informed, because there isn’t anything that’s actually pay-walled in the game.

Everything offered in those microtransactions can be acquired in-game, just by playing it. Of course there’s nothing stopping players from voicing their distaste, but to call these entirely optional purchases a “cash grab” is inherently misleading, because at no point does Capcom try to convince you that you have to buy any of these microtransactions.

There’s also the fact that even if you don’t like these kinds of microtransactions, this is not at all out of character for Capcom. Every recent Resident Evil release has microtransactions for items and in-game currency that you can just collect by playing the game.

It’s a shortcut for players who want it, and if they make that choice then that’s their choice. If you don’t like them, vote with your wallet and don’t buy them.

More importantly than ignorable microtransactions, Capcom also commented on the technical issues players are experiencing with the game at launch, which is a criticism that actually holds water.

The studio is aware of the issues Dragon’s Dogma 2 has, and is working to address them. You can see their full statement below.

To all Dragon’s Dogma 2 players

We would like to update you on the status of the following items, about which we have received numerous comments from the community. To all those looking forward to this game, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience.

– Crashes and bug fixes
We are investigating/fixing critical problems such as crashes and freezing.
We will be addressing crashes and bug fixes starting from those with the highest priority in patches in the near future.

– The option of starting a new game
We are looking at adding a feature to the Steam version of the game that will allow players that are already playing to restart the game. We will announce more details as soon as we can.

– Paid DLC
All the items listed below can be obtained in-game or as paid DLC items.
Art of Metamorphosis – Character Editor
Ambivalent Rift Incense – Change Pawn Inclinations
Portcrystal – Warp Location Marker
Wakestone – Restore the dead to life!
500 Rift Crystals / 1500 Rift Crystals / 2500 Rift Crystals – Points to Spend Beyond the Rift
Makeshift Gaol Key – Escape from gaol!
Harpysnare Smoke Beacons – Harpy Lure Item

– Regarding Frame Rate
A large amount of CPU usage is allocated to each character and calculating the impact of their physical presence in various areas. In certain situations where numerous characters appear simultaneously, the CPU usage can be very high and may affect the frame rate. We are aware that in such situations, settings that reduce GPU load may currently have a limited effect; however, we are looking into ways to improve performance in the future.
