Octopath Traveler II Review Mini – Review Mini

A fine game being resold at full price with no upgrade path.

Revisiting Octopath Traveler II on Switch 2 was a pleasant experience. This is a game that takes the foundation of the first game and hammers it into a tighter format. The eight disparate stories are better connected and feature new refinements and layers to combat and environmental engagement. It’s a fun game that was enjoyable to revisit, especially because I was able to take a different initial order of characters. However, the Switch 2 version of this game, initially sold at full price with no upgrade route or transferable saves, adds nothing more than a visual upgrade.

I mean, it’s a nice visual upgrade, making the HD-2D visuals pop at 60 frames per second at an increased resolution that appears to be in line with Octopath Traveler 0’s Switch 2 performance. But that’s all it is. It’s Octopath Traveler II, exactly as it was on the original Switch, but with some slightly nicer visuals. My 2023 review of Octopath Traveler II still holds true because well, it’s virtually identical. The game’s a quality RPG and if you’re hankering for some throwback vibes with modern niceties, it’s a great one to play. It’s not quite the pinnacle of the series (that’s 2025’s Octopath Traveler 0, which I reviewed last year), but this is still worthy of your time. Just maybe not a necessity to get on Switch 2, unless you’re down for the two-pack that comes with Octopath Traveler I and II for a more palpable price (essentially makes each game half off).
