Backstage Update On John Cena’s WWE Contract & AEW Rumor

John Cena reportedly won’t be coming out of retirement for a run with AEW.

Cena officially wrapped up his in-ring career earlier this year and has remained adamant that his retirement is legitimate. When previously asked what it would take to get him back in the ring, Cena joked that it would amount to “financial suicide” for any promoter unless they were “in the business of torching currency.”

Despite some speculation about AEW potentially making such an offer, there have reportedly been no discussions regarding Cena joining the company since his retirement, nor has the possibility ever been seriously considered.

There is also a contractual hurdle that would prevent it from happening. Cena remains under a multi-year deal with WWE that will see him continue working as an ambassador for the company. The belief within WWE is that the agreement would contractually prevent Cena from wrestling for another promotion.

Meanwhile, WWE is still planning to hold the previously announced John Cena Classic later this year. The current target is reportedly December, although that timetable remains subject to change.
