Five Things We Want To See From Xbox’s Gears Of War: E-Day Direct

It’s been almost two years since E-Day was first revealed, and developer The Coalition has been very quiet on the game since. In June though, we’ll get a proper deep dive on the next Gears title straight from the studio, and we have lots of things we want to see.

So, we’re going to put together a quick list of some of the story beats, game modes, features and more that we want to see from Gears of War: E-Day – and indeed want to see shown at the game’s Direct this June. Exciting times ahead, Gears fans!

1. A Proper Look At Kalona City, The Game’s War-Ravaged Location

One of the most exciting things about Gears of War: E-Day is the game’s return to a more focused, tight-knit setting. Earlier this year, we found out that the next Gears game would be set in a single war-ravaged city, and although that’s been teased already with pre-launch images and such, we want to see lots more of it during the Direct.

Show us the scale of the city and how its inhabitants are dealing with the imminent threat of the Locust. Show us how we’ll be traversing Kalona, whether on-foot or via Gears’ famous Junker truck. A hint at how this will all be structured would be nice too, although given E-Day is harkening back to the series’ roots, we are expecting this to be a largely linear affair.

2. Give Us Something, Anything About The Relationship Between Marcus & Dom

You all heard it, right? The haunting, tear-jerking tease of Mad World in the original Gears: E-Day trailer? Well, it was certainly there, and with the trailer’s focus on the connection between Marcus and Dom being front and centre, we’d like to see more of that during the Direct in a few months’ time.

The Gears franchise has long been famous for its quips; the banter between Delta Squad – and we’d love to see the team link back to that here. Something like a campaign level walkthrough featuring an honest, down-to-earth chat with our famous Gears brothers-in-arms would put a huge smile on our faces. Anyone who’s played the original trilogy knows what we’ve been through with these characters, and we’re hugely looking forward to seeing that all fleshed out in E-Day.

3. The Locust Look Scary In E-Day, And We Want To Know What We’re Truly Up Against

Our first introduction to Gears E-Day made even the lowly Locust Drone look like a formidable foe, and honestly, we’re not sure we’re ready to face whatever else the Locust Army will throw our way. Those first few Gears games had some pretty frightening enemies like Corpsers, Boomers and Brumaks, and we’ve got a feeling that The Coalition is going to make them even tougher this time around.

Of course, we’re also expecting the team to give us plenty of never-before-seen enemies too, and these are what we’re most excited to see. The Swarm / DeeBee enemies in the newer Gears games just never hit the same, and we’re incredibly excited to see new Locust enemy designs here in 2026.

4. Show Us Your Unreal Engine 5 Expertise, The Coalition

Before we move on to talk a little bit about the other game modes we want to see in E-Day, one other thing we want the campaign to show off is the game’s Unreal Engine 5 prowess. The Coalition has long been one of Xbox’s most impressive studios from a tech perspective, and with this being the first Gears game on UE5, we’re really looking forward to seeing what they have in store for us.

Gears of War was a showpiece for Xbox 360, Gears of War 4 got the most out of Xbox One and Gears 5 was mighty impressive on Xbox One X and Series X|S – so let’s see just how far E-Day will push things. Based on what we’ve seen so far and what we know about this studio, Gears of War: E-Day could be one of the best-looking games to ever hit the current generation of consoles. Chef’s kiss!

5. Horde & Multiplayer Are Important, And We Want To See The E-Day Versions In Action

So far, all of the focus on E-Day has been centred around campaign, but what about Horde and multiplayer modes? After the game’s initial reveal, The Coalition promised us that the next Gears of War would be a full-blown title with all the modes you’ve come to expect, and we sincerely hope that includes Horde and a suite of multiplayer features.

On top of this, what about something entirely new? Gears has long experimented with co-op modes — such as Beast in Gears of War 3 and Overrun in Gears Judgment — and we’d be down to see something like those again in E-Day as well. We’re very happy to see the tone of Gears shift back towards the beginnings of the franchise, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want plenty of new features too. Give us reasons to keep coming back to Gears of War: E-Day, Xbox!

Those are just some of the things we want to see in the Gears of War: E-Day Direct this June (trust us, there’s lots more), but what about you folks? Is there anything in particular that you want to see from The Coalition during Xbox’s summer showcase this year?
