Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time Remake Required ‘More Time And Investment Than We Could Responsibly Commit,’ Says Ubisoft

Ubisoft announced earlier this week that Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time Remake has been cancelled as part of a major company overhaul, and has now said that the project “required more time and investment than we could responsibly commit.”
Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time Remake was originally announced back in 2020 and was intended to launch on January 21, 2021, but suffered numerous delays and shakeups during its production. At one stage the project was reported to have been completely overhauled by Ubisoft Montreal, which wanted to go with a more “realistic approach.” In June 2024, a few months after reports of the overhaul, Ubisoft Toronto was confirmed to have joined the remake team.
Back in May last year, Ubisoft said that Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time Remake would launch by April 2026, and only last week the game was rated by the ESRB suggesting a release wasn’t far off. Unfortunately, the project will not see the light of day as Ubisoft opted to scrap it entirely.
A more detailed statement about the game’s cancellation was shared on social media by Ubisoft:
We’ve made the difficult decision to stop development on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. We know this is deeply disappointing. The game carries enormous meaning for fans and for the teams who worked on it. While the project had real potential, we weren’t able to reach the level of quality you deserve, and continuing would have required more time and investment than we could responsibly commit. And, we didn’t want to release something that fell short of what The Sands of Time represents.
Ubisoft has assured fans that this isn’t the end of the franchise as a whole, but right now there’s no news regarding any other Prince of Persia title being in the works.
