Universal Tower Defense relics guide

We all need to find the best build for our games, and Universal Tower Defense relics can add huge amounts of value to your gameplay. They’re useful tools that can provide passive buffs – plus, unlike traits, you can move them about between your units so that your strongest guy has the strongest relic.
In this guide, we’ll run through all the relic sets and which ones are best, as well as how to get your hands on them through farming. Plus, we’ll tell you how to get the rarer relics, as it’s slightly easier than you might imagine.
Here’s everything in our Universal Tower Defense relics guide:
What are Universal Tower Defense relics?
Universal Tower Defense relics are special items that drop from completing stages, and come in the form of a headpiece, something for the chest, or pants. You can equip them onto your characters, swap them if it’s not working out, and get powerful set bonuses from them – including crit rate boosts, damage increases, and cooldown reductions.
All Universal Tower Defense relic sets
Relics belong to a set, which, if you equip all relics of the same set, can provide a set bonus on top of their individual buffs. The lists below give you a comprehensive guide to all the set bonuses on offer:
Ex Captain Uraharo set
The Ex Captain Uraharo set specialises in crit rate and damage, so if you’re looking to pack a punch, this set is a great pick.
| Piece | Effect | How to obtain |
| Ex Captain Uraharo Pants | 10% critical rate and 25% critical damage | Hollowed Moon story mode |
| Ex Captain Uraharo Cloak | 10% critical rate and 25% critical damage | Hollowed Moon story mode |
| Ex Captain Uraharo Hat | Get 5% of the yen back after upgrading the unit | Hollowed Moon virtual realm mode |
Berserk Shinigami set
The Berserk Shinigami set is also damage-based, but it’s more about raw damage than it is about critical. This set offers damage increase for both armor and attacks.
| Piece | Effect | How to obtain |
| Berserk Shinigami Pants | 5% damage increase and 15% armor damage increase | Hollowed Moon story mode |
| Berserk Shinigami Uniform | 5% damage increase and 15% armor damage increase | Hollowed Moon story mode |
| Berserk Shinigami head relic | Every sixth attack deals 20% bonus true damage | Hollowed Moon virtual realm mode |
Sun God set
The Sun God set is based on improving the damage that you can deal using your elemental powers – light, water, and ice specifically. It can be helpful for specialized units.
| Piece | Effect | How to obtain |
| Sun God Pants | 5% damage increase and 10% Light/Water/Ice damage increase | Marine Base story mode |
| Sun God Shirt | 5% damage increase and 10% Light/Water/Ice damage increase | Marine Base story mode |
| Sun God Hat | Every six attacks, gain a damage buff equal to the Units’ range for seven seconds | Marine Base virtual realm mode |
Laughing Captain set
The Laughing Captain set focuses on utility outside of damage, like cooldown and range on your attacks. If damage isn’t a problem for you, you might want to consider this set.
| Piece | Effect | How to obtain |
| Laughing Captain Pants | 5% damage increase, -5% attack cooldown, and +5% range increase |
Marine Base story mode |
| Laughing Captain Shirt | 5% damage increase, -5% attack cooldown, and +5% range increase |
Marine Base story mode |
| Laughing Captain Hat | 10% ability cooldown reduction | Marine Base virtual realm mode |
Junior Ninja Relic set
The Junior Ninja Relic set focuses on wind damage, and the hat also increases your other buffs, so this is definitely worth having if you have a wind build.
| Piece | Effect | How to obtain |
| Junior Ninja Pants | 5% damage increase and 10% Wind damage increase |
Ninja Forest story mode |
| Junior Ninja Jacket | 5% damage increase and 10% Wind damage increase |
Ninja Forest story mode |
| Junior Ninja Headband | Increases buff effectiveness by x1.1 | Ninja Forest virtual realm mode |
How do I get Universal Tower Defense relics?
You acquire Universal Tower Defense relics through drops for completing tower defense stages. As you can see in the tables above, different game modes offer different relics, so if you’re grinding, make sure you select the right stage for the corresponding relic you want. Shirts and pants are obtainable via story mode, while hats appear in the virtual realm.
Relics can also come in different rarities. To get a higher rarity relic, you need to complete a stage with greater difficulty, like Nightmare. It’s not an exact science, because you also need to be lucky, but you’re much more likely to come across a higher rarity relic in a later stage. Don’t waste time farming levels on lower difficulties if you have the strength to farm higher ones, and if you need some extra luck, some Universal Tower Defense codes might have something to help you.
What are the best Universal Tower Defense relic sets?
As always, which relic set is best depends on your playstyle and which Universal Tower Defense traits your units have. You should also take the rarity of your relics into account and prioritise the rare ones. That being said, here are our tips for the best relic sets.
- Ex Captain Uraharo set: these relics can help you harness critical power, which is often crucial for damage output
- Sun God set: given that these relics boost three elemental type damage outputs, they have a wide range of usage and are versatile enough to be handy to nearly every player
- Laughing Captain set: if your units are powerful enough already and you have excellent traits, these relics will help you massively with what can be difficult cooldowns and short attack ranges.
You should pair these relics with great characters and traits, so you may want to check out a Universal Tower Defense tier list for comparison.
