Digital Foundry Speculates Whether There’ll Be An Xbox Series S Successor Next-Gen

Just a few hours ago, we shared a discussion about Project Helix and the sort of price we can possibly expect it to launch at, and while it’s sounding like that particularly device will be pretty high-end, another outlet has speculated on whether Microsoft will return to the lower end of the market with some sort of successor to Xbox Series S.
Indeed, the folks at Digital Foundry talked about this on a recent episode of the DF Direct podcast. The most interesting part of the discussion relates back to Xbox announcing its next-gen partnership with AMD, and how Microsoft mentioned that this will result in “a portfolio of devices including our next-generation Xbox consoles” being built.
Here’s what DF had to say on that:
“I think It’s basically a case of what is this ‘strategic partnership’ with AMD all about. They’re talking about a range of devices there, right? Which could potentially include your lower end machine in the form of like an AMD APU, which have been getting progressively more and more powerful over time. And, maybe by the time the next generation comes around, they’ve got a really good APU coming out that is Xbox compatible.”
Of course, ‘a portfolio of devices’ could mean anything from laptops to mobile phones given Xbox’s recent strategy, but the summer 2025 announcement did mention ‘Xbox consoles” as you can see up above – and this announcement came after the ROG Xbox Ally reveal, so you’d assume that the team isn’t referring to the ASUS device here. It was vague and certainly remains open to interpretation, but it’s an interesting thing to ponder either way.
You can have a look at DF’s own thought process on this up above, and we’ll link to some of our related Project Helix / next-gen Xbox stories down below as well, including a reminder of that AMD partnership announce from last year.
