Resident Evil Requiem Director Wants To Test Players’ Wits With The Game’s Bosses

Koshi Nakanishi, the director on Resident Evil Requiem, has said that he’d rather the game’s bosses put players’ wits to the test as opposed to their skills with a firearm.

Speaking with Automaton, Nakanishi-san confirmed that the ninth mainline entry in the survival horror series will, of course, features bosses — something that’s been a staple of the franchise the past near-30 years. Whether it’s Yawn, G-Birkin, Nemesis, Gulp Worm and various other nasties, Resident Evil bosses are the reason you stock up on precious ammo and healing supplies.

Of course there will be boss battles. However, rather than defeating enemies in a flashy manner as you progress through the game, like in games that emphasise gun shooting action, the style is more like Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2, where players expand their exploration area in a closed space and overcome obstacles using their wits.

One thing that’s so appealing about the Resident Evil series is that characters who are initially terrified grow stronger as they gain experience in extreme situations. Grace is scared at first, but the situation eventually causes her to snap, and she becomes able to fight her enemies.

Speaking during a separate interview with TheGamer, Nakanishi alongside producer Masato Kunazawa revealed that the mysterious hooded chap seen in the trailers is not a returning character, but someone new to the RE9. The main character of Resident Evil Requiem is Grace Ashcroft, daughter of Alyssa from Resident Evil Outbreak, although there have been persistent rumours she will share the bill with Leon S. Kennedy.

Set 30 years after the destruction of Raccoon City as depicted in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis and its remake, Resident Evil Requiem follows Grace, an FBI agent, as she investigates a series of brutal murders at the Wrenwood Hotel, the same location her mother was killed eight years before the game’s events.

Resident Evil Requiem is slated for release on February 27, 2026 for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
