Tekken Tag Tournament 3 Is Not Likely To Happen Anytime Soon, Says Katsuhiro Harada

Katsuhiro Harada, Tekken Series Producer, has revealed during an interview with Destructoid that Tekken Tag Tournament 3 is probably a long way off at this point, and is likely not going to see the light of day during his development career. That said, he’s not ruling out a Tag mode to be added in a future game.

Asked if he would consider working on a third Tekken Tag entry, possibly as the next instalment in the franchise after Tekken 8, Harada-san said that a possible Tag mode has been something he’s been thinking about. Elaborating, he feels “like it should be some kind of mode within a Tekken 9, or 8, or whatever you want to call it.”

Pushed as to whether this means there’s no plans for a full-fledged Tekken Tag Tournament 3, Harada highlighted a few issues with the concept, such as “if we start now [to make Tekken Tag Tournament 3], by the time they’re [tag fighting games ]no longer popular, that’s when Tag Three would come out.”

It’s probably a ways off if it were to happen, and so probably not in my working lifetime. So that’s something that the next generation can decide.

The original Tekken Tag Tournament launched in arcades back in 1999 and used the same engine as Tekken 3, and was enhanced for PS2 in 2000 to take advantage of the console’s visual capabilities. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 arrived in 2011 for arcades, and saw a console port in 2021 for PS3 and Xbox 360.

However, the game was a commercial disappointment, and it’s well known at this point among fans that it nearly killed the franchise; Harada had to really work had to convince Bandai Namco to green light Tekken 7, and would only allow for a much smaller budget.

Speaking in the same interview, Harada touched on Tekken x Street Fighter, revealing the project reached about 30% complete and that he’d like to one day show off what the team managed to achieve.
