Epic Games’ Fortnite has ranked as the number most downloaded mobile app on the US App Store every day since its return so far, according to Sensor Tower rankings data.
The battle royale and UGC platform ended its near five-year exile this week after Apple caved in to pressure from the US courts to comply with an injunction on its anti-steering practices.
Since its comeback, it has ranked as the most downloaded app on the US iPhone App Store on May 21st and 22nd. At the time of writing, it also currently tops the charts for May 23rd.
On May 22nd it ranked above apps including ChatGPT, Threads, Google and WhatsApp. In the games rankings, it topped a list that includes NetEase’s new launch Dunk City Dynasty, Hungry Studio’s Block Blast, Dream Games Royal Kingdom and Netmarble’s Game of Thrones: Kingsroad.
Consequential comeback
Epic Games’ court battle that eventually led to Fortnite’s return has significant ramifications for the mobile market. Publishers are now able to link to alternative payment systems, while Apple has been blocked from anti-steering practices and scare screen tactics.
Apple has vowed to appeal in a move that, if successful, could potentially see the iOS ecosystem return to the status quo.
