Larian Studios’ Swen Vincke Says It’s ‘Deep In The Trenches’ On ‘Crazy Ambitious’ RPG
Baldur’s Gate III developer Larian Studios is waving goodbye to the franchise and Dungeons & Dragons for its next project, and has teased that it’s currently ‘deep in the trenches’ for what it has labelled a ‘crazy ambitious’ RPG.
Speaking with GameSpot, Larian Studios bigwig Swen Vincke touched base on where the studio is at following the release of Patch 8 for its critically acclaimed fantasy RPG, making it clear the developer is now fully focussed on what comes next. To that extent, he confirmed Larian is “deep in the trenches” on its “next thing,” joking he’s “painfully remembered how much work it is to make a game or a big RPG.”

While not able to go into much detail about the new game, he described it as a “crazy ambitious” project that’s “shaping up quite well.” Still, that’s not the only game Larian is working on, as it’s also got a second title in the works. “We’re trying to figure out how we’re going to be making two games,” said Vincke, noting it’s a challenging task as the studio is known for producing user-driven games with plenty of depth, so it’s “not the easiest thing in the universe, because wen are very complicated games, lots of permutations, lots of agency for players.”
We are in a position where we can craft multiple RPGs side by side so that we don’t have to worry about people going idle – that’s actually the main reason we’re doing multiple projects right now.
Baldur’s Gate III was released for the PC in August 2023 and arrived on PS5 the following month, achieving critical and commercial success, picking up numerous Game of the Year awards in the process. You can read our full review here.
