Meta has laid off an unspecified number of staff in its Reality Labs division focused on VR and AR tech.
The Verge learned that the cuts specifically affected employees at Oculus Studios, the team behind apps and games for the company’s Quest VR headsets.
Meta did not disclose the number of employees affected but confirmed the cuts impacted teams working on Quest products, including the VR fitness app Supernatural, which it acquired through Within in 2023.
“Some teams within Oculus Studios are undergoing shifts in structure and roles that have impacted team size,” said Meta spokesperson Tracy Clayton in a statement.
“These changes are meant to help Studios work more efficiently on future mixed reality experiences for our growing audience, while still delivering great content for people today.
“We remain committed to investing in mixed reality experiences, including fitness and games, and our drive to deliver the best experiences possible for the Quest and Supernatural communities remains unchanged.”
Billions in losses
Reality Labs has been a major financial drain for Meta, losing nearly $5 billion in Q4 2024 while generating only about $1.1bn in sales.
Since its rebrand from Facebook, Meta has consistently reported multi-billion-dollar annual losses from Reality Labs as part of its metaverse efforts.
The layoffs come after the EU slapped Meta with a $214 million fine over failing to offer consumers a less data-intensive service option for using Facebook and Instagram.
