US-based software developer Perforce has acquired games and tech company Snowtrack for an undisclosed sum, aiming to empower digital art teams to track and manage changes to projects and files across departments.

Through the deal, Snowtrack has been rebranded to P4 One and launched in closed beta as part of the P4 platform – a collaboration suite unifying digital creation tools. Global launch is expected to follow later this year.

P4 is itself a rebrand of Perforce’s Helix Core, which already featured lightweight branching, virtual file sync, delta file transfer functionality and more. The rebrand represented “a step forward and a return to our roots” according to Perforce senior director of product management Brent Schiestl.

Blender, render and more

Now, with the addition of Snowtrack or P4 One, artists can track a visual history of their progress, whether they are designing in Adobe, Blender, or Unreal.

The beta’s image viewer renders file types such as GLTF, FBX, OBJ, HDR, EXR and PSD.

“Companies in game development, semiconductor, media and entertainment, and automotive rely on Perforce P4 as their collaboration backbone but often struggle with getting more artists and designers to adopt version control – a crucial step for maintaining a single source of truth across projects and departments,” said Perforce business unit VP Brad Hart.

“Our vision for the P4 platform is to enable collaboration across the many roles involved in developing technical and creative projects today. P4 One is a critical piece of this vision, as it delivers a seamless and intuitive versioning experience while maintaining the performance and security studios expect from Perforce.”

Schiestl posted on LinkedIn: “Very excited to finally unveil ‘one’ of the things we’ve been up to over the last few months! Artists and designers are officially out of valid reasons to avoid proper version control. Meet P4 One, the most intuitive version control client on the market.”
