RUMOR: Insider shares hands-on impressions of Switch successor

It seems not a day goes by lately without a new leak or rumor relating to the next Nintendo console. The latest batch of potential news comes from a Reddit user named NextHandheld, who created a thread titled “I’ve come from the future”, claiming to have gotten their hands on a “final release Switch 2 and its dock”.

Normally, we’d most likely dismiss something like this, but mods of the r/NintendoSwitch2 subreddit said that NextHandheld actually sent them proof that they were telling the truth. Apparently, the evidence can’t be shared publicly as it could give away the leaker’s true identity. Depending on how much stock you put into the word of Reddit mods, it sounds like NextHandheld has actually had time with the next Nintendo console, albeit only the hardware and not the software.

With that in mind, here’s a summary of the information they supplied throughout the Reddit thread:

  • The previous leaks/3D renderings of the next console have been basically accurate.
  • It actually is going to be called the Nintendo Switch 2, and the logo is the original Switch logo with a 2 next to it.
  • They were told of a mid-March release date, as well as a January reveal, but that info doesn’t come from a first party source.
  • There will be multiple colors of units, with gray coming first. White units may also be at launch, or coming later.
  • There will be a special edition of the console themed around a specific game that has yet to be named, although NextHandheld says the number 9 is in the title, most likely indicating Mario Kart 9. Whether or not this game/edition will be there at launch is unknown.
  • There’s some kind of new technology in the new Joy-Cons that no one has mentioned yet which “could create new experiences”. Specifically, it sounds like this feature is in the “top side of the Joy-Con when detached”. When asked for more specific info, NextHandheld replied “Think lasers”.
  • The Joy-Con magnets themselves can be used as buttons.
  • Joy-Cons, buttons, and sticks are just slightly larger than the Switch’s
  • The Joy-Cons will use hall effect sticks.
  • Original Joy-Cons should work with the new console but won’t be charged while attached to it
  • There is an audible clicking sound (non-digital) when attaching the Joy-Cons to the system
  • The dock is similar to the original Switch dock but with rounded edges, and wider. The dock doesn’t cover the entire screen, and some of it still sticks out at the top.
  • It is about the same weight as the original Switch and equally as thin
  • Switch 2 cartridges look similar to Switch cartridges and the cartridge port is the same size

Once again, none of this info is confirmed. Some or all of it could be false, but we won’t know for sure until Nintendo makes a formal announcement. Click here to read through all the questions and answers for yourself in the original Reddit thread.
