PlayStation Stars Is Coming Back In Regional Rollouts
PlayStation Stars has been down for nearly a month, but it’s confirmed that it’ll start to return in “phased regional rollouts.” The new rewards program kicked up by Sony had everyone thinking it was PlayStation’s foray into NFT’s when it was first revealed.
After PlayStation made it clear that it definitely is not an NFT thing, it seemed to be a perfectly fine reward system where players could earn a digital currency through making purchases on the PlayStation Store and through campaigns based on buying specific titles or simply playing certain games.
Making sure you check out the month’s PS Plus Games, for example, is an easy way to score coins each month. Then you can turn around and redeem those coins for actual PS Store gift cards of the $5 or $25 variety, or simply use them for a select number of games.
You can also put them towards more digital collectibles, but that feels like quite the waste of resources when actual money is on the line if you hold out and collect enough coins.
But players haven’t been able to do any of that for the last month, because the service has been down for 26 days, which realradec on Twitter pointed out is officially longer than the 2011 PSN hack that had the service down for 24 days.
It’s unclear how long this phased rollout will take, but as spotted by VGC on Reddit it appears to already be back in Asian regions like Hong Kong and Thailand.
Perhaps a bigger question though for players is what happened that caused the outage in the first place, and what will be done about all the campaigns players missed out on.
The aforementioned campaign to simply play one of the monthly PS Plus games for example, was unavailable for the whole of June. Will players be given the chance to complete any of the June campaigns, will rewards be increased for July or will Sony do nothing about it and just make sure the service is working again? We’ll see how it goes.
At the very least whatever points you might’ve earned for PS Store purchases made during the downtime will still be credited properly to your account, according to a new FAQ Sony added on the PlayStation Stars website.
