AEW Collision 12/23/23

Live from the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas! Tony Schiavone, Kevin Kelly, and Nigel McGuinness are on commentary.

Match #1. Continental Classic: Bryan Danielson (9) vs. Claudio Castagnoli (6)

Shoulder block by Claudio. Danielson locks in a kimura and gets a one count. Both men trade pinning combinations and we’re at a stalemate. Ankle pick and a surfboard by Danielson, after grabbing the nose, before stomping on the backs of the knees. Two count. European uppercut by Claudio floors Danielson. Danielson smiles and we’re in business, baby. Body slam and an elbow drop by Claudio. Death Lock by Danielson but Claudio escapes. Knuckle lock as both men trade monkey flips and neck bridges, while maintaining eye contact. Danielson boots Claudio in the jaw, as a receipt for the European uppercut from earlier. Claudio attacks Danielson in the corner with uppercuts and a short-arm clothesline. Claudio looks for the Giant Swing but Danielson dives for the Lebell Lock and gets it, but Claudio makes his way to the ropes. Running baseball slide by Danielson and a knee off the apron. Danielson throws Claudio into the steel steps shoulder-first. Roundhouse kicks by Danielson on the outside before rolling Claudio back in the ring. Danielson comes off the top but Claudio catches him with a European uppercut. Danielson fires back with a pair of running dropkicks in the corner. Claudio catches a third one in mid-air and it’s the Giant Swing! Claudio dumps him after about six revolutions and gets a two count. Sharpshooter by Claudio but Danielson fights to the ropes. Headbutt directly to the injured eye of Danielson, who proceeds to get clotheslined over the top rope. Running European uppercut to Danielson into the guardrail. Two count back inside the ring. Claudio locks in a sleeper as we head to PIP. Claudio looks for a superplex but Danielson crotches him on the top rope. Tree of Woe now as Danielson delivers some big roundhouse kicks to the midsection, and a big avalanche back suplex! Two count. Hammer and anvil elbows now by Danielson, but Claudio stands up with Danielson on his back. Claudio runs into a boot but Danielson transitions into the Lebell Lock! Claudio makes it to the ropes but the referee doesn’t see the leg on the bottom rope initially. Hard chops in the corner by Danielson and a hurricanrana off the top, but Danielson holds on and elbows Danielson on the top rope! Twisting superplex by Claudio! One, two, no! “Fight forever” chants ring out through the arena. More uppercuts from Claudio before attempting the Ricola Bomb, but Danielson counters with a triangle choke! Claudio deadlifts Danielson and plants him with the Neutralizer! Two count. Claudio looks for another Neutralizer but Danielson slips out the back and catches him with a Busaiku Knee! Two count. Wrist trapped now and stomps to the face by Danielson! Danielson sweeps Claudio and delivers some boots to the face, and Claudio responds! Both men have each other’s wrists trapped from their back and they’re delivering kicks to the face. Claudio attacks the injured eye of Danielson before locking in the Sharpshooter! One minute remains! Claudio pulls Danielson in to the middle of the ring but he’s not tapping! With ten seconds remaining, Claudio abandons the Sharpshooter and drills Danielson with a European uppercut but time has run out!

Winner: Draw

Rating: ****1/4. The spirit of the fight! Outstanding professional wrestling match here, between two of the best right now. I’d love to see this match get another 15 minutes, but this whole situation made sense.

Danielson advances to the Blue League finals with the draw, as both men hug after the bell.

A video package of the Gold League finals is shown, as Moxley, Swerve, and Jay White meet in a triple threat match.

Match #2. AEW World Trios Championship: The Acclaimed & Daddy Ass vs. Top Flight & Action Andretti

Caster with a shoulder block and head lock to Darius, who returns in kind. Arm drag by Caster. Sunset flip by Caster who tags Bowens, who proceeds to deliver a neckbreaker to Darius on the knees of Caster. Snap mare by Darius and a dropkick by Dante, who’s now legal. Running neckbreaker by Bowens and a rock, paper, scissors, shoot combination. All six men are in now as Top Flight hits a dropkick on both members of The Acclaimed. Andretti and Daddy Ass are in now. Sidewalk slam to Andretti and a two count. Snap mare by Caster, who’s now legal. Andretti rolls him up from behind for two. Back from commercial with an enziguiri and superkick combo from Top Flight, an assisted DDT, and a running Shooting Star Press by Andretti. Ass breaks up the pin. Cobra Clutch Slam by Ass to Andretti and a Tilt-A-Whirl Slam to Darius. Scissor Me, Timbers but a double springboard dropkick from Top Flight breaks it up. Double suicide dive from Top Flight and a frog splash from Andretti. Andretti looks for another running Shooting Star Press but misses, and Caster rolls him up for the win!

Winners and STILL AEW World Trios Champions: Top Flight & Daddy Ass

Rating: ***. Fine trios match here, although I think Top Flight and Andretti are the future of the trios division. Nice to see the titles back, as well.

Match #3. Brian Cage w/ Prince Nana vs. Keith Lee

Tieres by Cage. Tieres by Lee. Spinning back kick by Cage to a stunned Lee, and a diving swinging DDT off the middle rope as we head to a commercial break. Lee lays in some body shots and Cage responds, only to eat a brutal elbow. Avalanche by Lee in the corner and now some more, heavier, body shots. Cage looks for a fireman’s carry but Lee hits a switch and an overhead belly-to-back. Spirit Bomb by Lee is countered, as Cage hits a 619! Cage looks for a deadlift superplex but Lee shoves him to the mat. Lee goes up top but Cage crotches him and superplexes Keith back inside. Cage gets a long two. Fireman’s carry by Cage right into the F5! Two count. Prince Nana gives Cage a cinderblock! Lee counters, picks Cage up on his shoulder, Big Bang Catastrophe! That’ll do it.

Winner: Keith Lee

Rating: **1/2. Big man bumping big man stuff. The rebuilding of Keith Lee continue!
