Dueling industry surveys show Japanese game devs are embracing AI, while North American ones are still skeptical
As reported by Automaton, the 2026 CESA Videogame Industry Report, a survey-based assessment of the Japanese games business, shows a sharp uptick in AI adoption by Japanese developers: 85.8% in 2026, up from 51% just last year. In July, a separate survey covering just online game devs showed a 100% rate of AI adoption.
Breaking things down further, 63% of total respondents claim to use generative AI tools on a daily basis, while 22.8% turn to them more irregularly. The survey did not distinguish between disciplines or different forms of generative AI output like code, concept art, in-game assets, or text.
Developers cited benefits including improved efficiency and reduced cost and development time, while “human verification” and avoiding the use of generated material in player-facing circumstances are commonly-deployed safety measures.

The Japanese industry has been far quicker to adopt AI tools than its North American counterpart: Just 36% of respondents to a similar GDC 2026 survey reported using AI tools as part of their job, while 52% of survey respondents believe generative AI is negatively impacting the industry.
One thing I’m curious about is whether Japanese gamers are as vocally hostile to generative AI use as their anglosphere counterparts. Even if there isn’t the same social stigma amongst developers, it just looks tacky and cheap when AI-generated assets sneak into a retail game.
The Japanese industry certainly appears to be in a healthier place overall compared to North American triple-A, but I’m skeptical whether generative AI adoption has significantly contributed to that health, and it could very well precipitate quality, player trust, or employment stability issues down the line.
