Patrick Stewart, the classically-trained actor who gained worldwide fame in the 1980s as Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation and later as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men film series, has died. A message posted on Stewart’s official X account said his passing came “following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia.”

Stewart joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966, and took his first television role a year later on the long-running British series Coronation Street. He debuted on Broadway in 1971, and subsequently appeared in several feature films. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2010, becoming Sir Patrick, which he described as “an unlooked-for honour.”
