Xbox Project Helix Faces More Challenges As Micron Warns Of RAM Shortages Into 2028

Throughout the course of 2026, we’ve heard various people at Xbox talking about something called the “component crisis”, which refers to an ongoing memory and storage crunch that’s been driven in part by demand from AI datacentres.

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has advised that the entire industry needs to “innovate on affordability and efficiency” at the moment, but that obviously comes with quite a few headaches when trying to launch a next-generation console.

Here’s a statement that Xbox shared back in June 2026 about the component crisis:

“Unfortunately, console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x and we expect another doubling by the fall of 2027. The entire consumer electronics industry is struggling with the current components crisis, but the effects are particularly hard on consoles.”

One of the three main providers of DRAM is a company called Micron, and speaking as part of the company’s FY 2026 earnings call this week (thanks, TheRegister), CEO Sanjay Mehrotra advised that he sees “demand exceeding supply” in both 2027 and 2028, and potentially even longer than that.

“In calendar 2027 as well as 2028, we see demand exceeding supply. In fact, we see greater tightness in the industry in 2027 and in 2028 versus 2026. Overall, supply-demand environment is only getting tighter.”

“We do not have line of sight to when supply and demand will return to balance.”

Of course, we don’t fully know what’s going on at Xbox right now (including which providers they’ll be using for storage and memory), and there’s every chance Microsoft will have put in the necessary measures to alleviate the potential costs as much as possible, but it’s just hard to see how they’ll make Helix an “affordable” console at this point.

That goes for PlayStation as well with the PS6, and don’t be surprised if the Nintendo Switch 2 keeps going up in price over the next couple of years too. This is just the world we’re living in at the moment, folks – nobody that’s making gaming hardware seems fully protected from it.

Before all of this happened, I speculated that we might be hearing more about Xbox Project Helix to align with the 25th anniversary of Xbox on November 15th, and I still have a slight feeling that could happen, but are we really looking at a future where Xbox is planning to launch a console in a year-or-two’s time? It’s a bold move if they go through with it.
