Update On WWE’s Plans To ‘Raid’ CMLL & AEW Talent Roster

An update has surfaced regarding WWE’s interest in bringing talent over from CMLL.

Despite speculation about WWE potentially “raiding” the CMLL roster to bolster AAA, the company reportedly has not made any major moves in that direction beyond signing La Catalina.

The current belief is that WWE plans to fill AAA television with a combination of WWE talent and established AAA names rather than bringing in a large number of new wrestlers from CMLL.

There could be at least one exception, however, as Persephone is reportedly expected to receive an offer from WWE once she is legally able to negotiate.

“Regarding raiding talent from CMLL, there has not been any hardcore moves in that direction past signing La Catalina,” Dave Meltzer wrote in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter at F4WOnline.com. “The belief right now is that they are filling AAA television with both WWE talent and some of the major name stars of AAA, and really aren’t looking for people new, although Persephone is expected to get an offer when she is legally able.”

Meltzer noted that WWE’s approach could change if AAA’s business expands.

“If they get an American television deal and more sponsors and the budget increases to where they need more Mexican stars, that obviously could change.”

Persephone’s situation is particularly noteworthy because it was announced in January that she is under a dual contract with CMLL and AEW.

Despite her AEW deal, it was later reported that Persephone did not choose AEW over WWE. Instead, her existing CMLL contract prevented her from speaking with WWE and receiving an offer.

“I am told Persephone did not pick AEW over WWE because she never actually got a WWE offer,” Bryan Alvarez noted. “She has been under CMLL contract and hasn’t been able to talk with WWE at all. Like a lot of others she took the opportunity to add the AEW contract to the CMLL one.”

For now, WWE reportedly isn’t aggressively pursuing additional CMLL talent, though Persephone could become a name to watch once her contractual situation allows her to negotiate.
