If your AMD chipset drivers are mysteriously failing to install like mine, you’ll need to manually update instead
Keeping on top of chipset driver updates is a boring, but necessary part of maintaining a modern PC. Unfortunately, both myself and fellow hardware nerd Jacob Fox have run into an issue with the AMD Install Manager, which attempts to install the latest chipset driver and fails miserably on both our machines.
Very unhelpfully, the failed installer points to a general error page, which blitheringly suggests a whole host of vague, unrelated PC update conflicts might be to blame. I even reinstalled the entire AMD Adrenaline driver package in the hopes of an easy fix, to no avail.
However, you’ll be pleased to know that a manual chipset update package exists, as spotted by Reddit user Life_Recognition_963. Simply download the individual installer at the bottom of the 8.07.16.1035 release notes page, run and reboot, and voila, the tyranny of trying to keep your machine up to date is kept at bay once again.

It seems like the AMD Install Manager might be pointing at the wrong link, or providing a package that fails to install on a large number of machines. The accompanying Reddit thread is full of users complaining about the same issue, so the problem seems fairly widespread.
For what its worth, I’m running an AMD Ryzen 7 7700X on an ageing Gigabyte X670 mobo, while our Dr Fox is using a Ryzen 7 7800X3D with an Asus B650EM Max Gaming board. Looking at the reports, though, the issue seems to be chip and motherboard agnostic.
All’s well that ends well I guess, but keeping your chipset drivers (and all the other drivers on your machine) in tip-top condition is a good way of getting ahead of future issues. Unless the drivers themselves have problems, in which case stuff might break.
It can be a minefield, maintaining a gaming PC in 2026. Still, if only all fixes were as easy as downloading a separate installer package, ey?
