Petition Asking Sony To Reconsider Decision To Stop Physical Game Disc Production Hits 120,000 Signatures

A petition started by Jade Pearce, the CEO of an independent Canadian games retailer that calls for Sony to reconsider its decision to cease physical game disc production, has attracted 120,000 signatures.

Sony made the announcement to shift to digital-only titles in January 2028 just last week, attracting widespread criticism. The petition makes it clear that they aren’t against digital games, but rather the fact it’s the only choice available. It argues that scrapping physical game discs make its impossible for used game sales and game lending, as well as knock-on effects for industries that rely on physical media. Internet connection is also a factor, as not every region has access to fast and reliable speeds.

We are not against digital. We are against digital being the only option. A large and passionate community still wants a real, physical game they own outright, and Sony is about to take that choice away.

Sony did clarify recently in a message to developers that it will still be possible to request disc copies of games that have already been released prior to January 2028, which will be supported beyond that cutoff. Any new titles released after that time will only be available digitally.

A number of companies have responded to the news including iam8bit, voicing their disappointment over Sony’s choice to go digital-only in 18 months. Similarly, Hideo Kojima, the creator of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, has revealed he’s ‘really sad‘ to hear the news, and is concerned for game ownership going forward.
