Onimusha: Way Of The Sword Is Launching Into A Packed September, But Capcom Is Not Worried About It

Akihito Kadowaki, producer on Capcom’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword, has revealed that the company isn’t really worried about the game launching into a packed September 2026 slot, and was even surprised to see that many games arriving during this window.

In case you haven’t been keeping tabs on upcoming releases, September is home to a number of major games including Control Resonant, Dagon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition, Hot Wheels Infinite Rush, Marvel’s Wolverine, and more. However, speaking to VGC, Kadowaki-san remains confident in Onimusha: Way of the Sword despite the packed release slot, pointing to it leads character as a main selling point.

We were pretty surprised. We probably expected a lot of titles would be in that window, but we were still surprised to see just how many games were there. We think our lead character, Musashi, is a key selling point, alongside the satisfaction of the combat itself. The Issen mechanic, the parries, and all of those things come together to make a really unique, fresh experience, so we’re not worried.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is slated for release on September 25, 2026 for PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S. This latest entry in the franchise follows the aforementioned Musashi as he explores a dark fantasy version of Kyoto during the Edo period, where he battles against demonic swordsmen and other supernatural threats. Equipped with a powerful sword, Musashi is able to strike and parry opponents, while depleting his foes’ stamina will allow you to utilise the Break Issen mechanic, which dismembers enemies for a swift kill.

Capcom launched the original Onimusha for the PS2 back in 2001 and spawned a successful franchise that saw multiple follow-ups, including Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny (2002), Onimusha 3: Demon Siege (2004), and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams (2006). The series saw a major hiatus until 2018 not counting spinoffs, when Onimusha: Warlords was released to reignite interest.
