Rumour — Sonic CD Remake Is In The Pipeline

Mike Fischer, the former vice president of entertainment marketing for SEGA of America, has revealed during an interview with Sega 16 that he’s heard a Sonic CD Remake is currently in development.

“I’ve heard that they’re remaking Sonic CD, which would be wonderful. That was my favorite Sonic game,” commented Fischer, who working with the Sonic the Hedgehog creator around the time it launched the SEGA CD. That’s all he had to say on the subject, so naturally we’ll have to wait and see what SEGA has to say on the matter.

Sonic CD was released in 1993 for the SEGA CD, and is often cited as the best 2D entry in the long-running franchise. The game introduces two characters that have since become staples in the series — namely Metal Sonic and Amy Rose — and sees the Blue Blur protecting an extraterrestrial body, Little Planet, from Dr. Robotnik. One of the key mechanics in the game is time travel, allowing Sonic to access different versions of each stage featuring new layouts and visuals.

While the game was originally exclusive to the SEGA CD, Sonic CD was re-released for other formats over the years, notably in 2005 for Sonic Gems Collection on the PS2 and GameCube and more recently, Sonic Origins Collection.

SEGA hasn’t announced its major plans for Sonic the Hedgehog this year, despite the fact the series is celebrating 35 years in 2026.
