Moonbrella is a physics-based metroidvania heading to the Switch

Moonbrella, a unique 2D metroidvania from indie developer Jett Williams, is making its way to the Nintendo Switch. What make it stand out? A pretty neat umbrella mechanic – not to mention the inability to jump.

That’s right, in Moonbrella, players control a robot that can’t jump. Instead, it weilds a versatile umbrella, using it to launch across gaps, climb walls, and even provide a source of light.

The announcement came during the recent INDIE Live Expo, confirming Moonbrella will be launching on PC (via Steam), Nintendo Switch, and other consoles. The game uses a variety of umbrella tricks to help the player ascend to the moon.

The umbrella is a key part of the gameplay mechanic, allowing you to:

  • jab the umbrella tip into terrain to vault over obstacles
  • open the canopy to slow your fall and float long distances
  • hook onto ledges, vines and more with the handle to climb high and gain speed
  • upgrade with new movement options and locations.

Check out the trailer below to see this unique game in action.

Moonbrella is described as being focused on speedrunning and providing multiple ways to tackle challenges. The upgradeable umbrella introduces fresh obstacles for all types of players, rewarding those who master its unconventional controls.

We love covering indie games here at Pure Nintendo, and this one looks pretty special. Lead developer Jett Williams is certainly excited, having this to say:

“I grew up playing console games and fantasising about one day making my own. So being able to publish them myself is a dream come true. It’s crazy just how much indies can do themselves these days.”

While no specific release date is set just yet, we’re excited to know this interesting-looking title is heading to the Switch at some point. We’ll let you know once we no more details on a firm release date.
