SEGA Is Putting Focus On Classic IP With The SEGA Universe Initiative, Which Plans To ‘Share New Ways To Enjoy Them That Transcend The World Of Games’

SEGA Universe is a new initiative from the Japanese game developer that aims to put the focus on its classic IPs under the slogan “no old, stay gold,” and will include efforts such as anniversary projects.

The Sonic the Hedgehog creator has revealed an official website for SEGA Universe that goes into detail about the project, although it should be noted that not all of these efforts will necessarily be actual video games. However, key franchises such as Out Run and Streets of Rage are highlighted on the website.

We’ll shine a light on beloved past works that continue to be cherished by fans, and share new ways to enjoy them that transcend the world of games,” commented SEGA.

Games and characters born in the past. Transcending generations and borders, they continue to live on in the same universe—even today. Beyond games, expanding into film, music, fashion, and even further forms of entertainment. While changing form, the experience is constantly updated. Everything created here remains in someone’s memory and is passed on to the next generation.

The website for SEGA Universe has outlined a number of titles that fall under this category — known as 2026 Selected — that are celebrating major anniversaries this year. They are as follows:

  • Fantasy Zone (40th Anniversary)
  • Out Run (40th Anniversary)
  • Streets of Rage (35th Anniversary)
  • Rent a Hero (35th Anniversary)
  • Guardian Heroes (30th Anniversary)
  • NiGHTS Into Dreams (30th Anniversary)
  • Dynamite Deka (30th Anniversary )
  • Sakura Wars (30th Anniversary)
  • SGGG (aka Segagaga) (25th Anniversary)

SEGA had previously announced plans to revive a number of its classic franchises with brand new instalments, with the likes of Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, Jed Set Radio, Streets of Rage and more set to receive new entries and/or remakes. Revenge of Shinobi has already seen a brand new effort in the form of Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, and you can read our review on that here. The new Crazy Taxi game is rumoured to be an open-world affair, although nothing official has been confirmed yet.
