Switch gamers can now walk The Edge of Allegoria

“…buckle up, you legend. We’re going for a ride…”

There’s a Nintendo Direct tomorrow, but the good news for Switch gamers starts today. Button Factory Games and CobraTekku Games (CTG) have announced that their GameBoy-esque RPG The Edge of Allegoria—originally released for Windows in December 2024—is now available on Nintendo Switch.

The Edge of Allegoria may look like it would fit on the GameBoy, but its huge world and unabashedly crude sense of humor are better aligned with modern-day RPGs.

That trailer is light on story, so here you go:

After a devastating midlife crisis, the protagonist in The Edge of Allegoria embarks on a journey through the land of Allegoria. He explores the land, learns about its pitfalls, and discovers more about the history and secrets that Allegoria hides. Players can explore the expansive map, delve into dungeons, battle monsters, and perfect the sophisticated mastery system. The unique monochrome artwork makes the turn-based combat a real nostalgic journey with modern twists and turns, where there’s plenty of swearing. Here comes to the handheld what has always belonged on the handheld.

Actually, the press release doesn’t tell us much, either. The eShop listing? Well…

There’s a story in there somewhere… it’s just buried under layers of madness and debauchery.

OK, but it has to mean something, right? It’s literally there in the title!

Absolutely!

Does it matter? No! It’s a video game! Just enjoy it and stop worrying about what kind of subliminal messaging the developer is trying to inject into your subconscious…

Understood. Here are the the game’s key features:

  • The Edge of Allegoria offers a classic role-playing world full of monsters and magic and, as a 2D single-player game, provides a familiar gaming experience with modern ideas and touches.
  • 145 monster types, 41 boss fights, 31 dungeons and 6 divine beings await in their own overworld domain. Players can look forward to many hours of gameplay and constant variety on the screen.
  • 96 unique weapons, each offering unique combat skills. Players can equip their weapons over the course of several battles, and—with enough weapon experience—the skill and stats of the weapon are permanently retained by the player. The mission is clear; find all the weapons, learn all the skills and become overpowered!
  • A GameBoy retro look. The game’s developer, Joe Picknell, grew up with the aesthetic and knew straight away that he wanted this look for his debut work: an unusual nostalgic pixel artwork.

The Edge of Allegoria is available now in the Nintendo eShop for $24.99. For more information, visit cobratekku.games.
