Take-Two Was Reportedly Looking To Salvage Cancelled Perfect Dark Reboot Before Negotiations Fell Apart
The cancelled Perfect Dark reboot that was in development at Crystal Dynamics may have been saved by Take-Two had negotiations not fallen apart, according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier.
The report claims that industry behemoth Take-Two was in talks with Microsoft and Embracer Group to fund and publish the Perfect Dark reboot, but the companies were unable to reach a deal for the long-term ownership of the franchise, and as such the deal collapsed.
Perfect Dark had been a collaborative effort between Crystal Dynamics and Microsoft’s The Initiative studio, and was cancelled earlier this summer alongside Everwild. The Initiative also shut its doors as a result, and Crystal Dynamics also confirmed recently they had made the decision to lay off a number of staff.

The Initiative was established in 2018 and was co-developing the Perfect Dark reboot alongside Crystal Dynamics, and was set to be directed by Brian Horton, previously of Insomniac Games. Perfect Dark was set to reinvigorate the franchise by injecting modern gameplay mechanics and following a fresh narrative, with players controlling agent Joanna Dark in a near-futuristic setting where mega-corporations mask dangerous secrets.
