Tetsuya Nomura ‘Can’t Share’ Info On Sephiroth’s Design For Upcoming Magic: The Gathering Card

Square Enix‘s Tetsuya Nomura is keeping tight-lipped about the design for a Sephiroth an appearance on an upcoming card in Magic: The Gathering and its possible relation to Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3.

For those unaware, a collaboration with Final Fantasy and Magic: The Gathering will see a number of characters from Square Enix’s venerable RPG series to the card title, Sephitorth being one of them. There’s a Sephiroth Fabled Soldier card, as well as Safer Sephiroth, who as fans of FFVII will know is the final boss of the game.

Nomura-san serves as the creative director on FFVII Remake and was an artist on the original 1997 RPG, and also illustrated the Sephiroth card for Magic: The Gathering. Regarding Safer Sephiroth, which differs from original design, Nomura isn’t able to share any details behind this decisions — not yet, anyway.

This time around, I drew Sephiroth on both the front and back sides of the card. I actually drew them so that they would join up if placed one on top of the other, so if you manage to get two of the same card and line them, up you’ll see how the original illustration looked.

There is also a reason that the design for Safer Sephiroth is different from the original game, but I unfortunately can’t share more about that.

Whether this is an indication that the design may pertain in some way to Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 (Sephiroth will of course play a huge role in that game’s narrative) remains unknown, but whatever the case, Nomura’s keeping mum on the subject.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 is currently in development for PS5 and is expected to arrive at some point in 2027, with the voice actor for Cloud Strife recently hinting that English voice recording for the project has started. In addition, Yoshinori Ono previously commented that the story for the third part of the FFVII Remake project is complete, and that he’ ‘very satisfied‘ as the game’s productions continues to progress as scheduled.

The development team also confirmed that fans will indeed be able to freely navigate the game world in Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 with the Highwind Airship.
