Scopely has signed a strategic partnership with The Witcher developer CD Projekt to make a game set within one of the studio’s IPs.
The news was revealed in an earnings call by CD Projekt joint CEO Michal Nowakowski. When questioned, he provided no further details on the project and when it would be released.
CD Projekt owns the rights to The Witcher games and is currently working on The Witcher IV. It has also developed Cyberpunk 2077, released in 2020, based on the tabletop game series.
Scopely has extensive experience bringing IP to mobile, working on titles such as the multi-billion dollar hit Monopoly Go, Star Trek Fleet Command, and Marvel Strike Force. The publisher also recently acquired Niantic’s games business for $3.5bn, including titles such as Pokémon GO, Monster Hunter Now and Pikmin Bloom.
PC and console push
Scopely may soon be stepping further into the PC and console space, where it already has titles like Stumble Guys and Star Trek Fleet Command. In an interview with PocketGamer.biz, Savvy Games group CEO Brian Ward said the company, which owns the developer, intends to make a move in the market.
“We’re still sort of working that out,” said Ward, adding that it has been focused on supporting Scopely in growing its business as a priority.
“But we do need to turn our mind to PC and console. That could be through the lens of Scopely, but there could be something that’s not in Scopely’s wheelhouse also, but hopefully we’ll figure that out shortly.”
