Insomniac Games’ Ted Price Reveals The Studio’s Most Stressful Period Was When It Moved On From Working With Sony
Ted Price, CEO of Insomniac Games who recently announced he is retiring next month, has said during a chat with Kinda Funny Games that the most stressful period for the Ratchet & Clank developer was after it decided to move away from working exclusively with Sony.
Insomniac started out developing many of its titles for PlayStation hardware as a third-party studio, including Spyro the Dragon and Ratchet & Clank, but in 2010 decided to branch out by working on multiplatform games. Sony Interactive Entertainment later acquired the company in 2019.
I think the most stressful period was when we had moved away from working with Sony, and we were getting comfortable with working with other partners who had completely different approaches than we did. I think we had become so compatible with Sony in terms of our approach and philosophies, that it was a little bit of a shock, and took some adjusting to work with other our approach and and philosophies that it was a little bit of a shock; and it took some adjusting to work with other publishers, and that can be distracting, when you’re trying to get games out the door.

I think for every developer-publisher relationship, it takes time to mature and get to a place where both parties are comfortable. And during that period when we weren’t working as closely with Sony, we didn’t give it enough time; we didn’t give ourselves a lot of time with these other publishers before we ultimately went back to Sony. But at the same time, I think we knew what we were looking for, and we knew that from the beginning we had the best and most compatible partner we had always been Sony.
Price also revealed during the chat with Kinda Funny Games that Insomniac pitched a new Resistance game to Sony, but the plans ultimately didn’t work out. While Resistance probably isn’t coming back anytime soon, Insomniac Games has plenty in the pipeline, including Marvel’s Wolverine, which hopefully we’ll hear more about soon.
