Insomniac Did Pitch Resistance 4, But “It Didn’t Work Out,” Says Co-Founder Ted Price
Ted Price, who many would know as the co-founder of Insomniac Games, will be retiring this coming March. Ahead of him riding off into the sunset, Price took some time to sit down with Kinda Funny Games, where Price admitted to a favourite project of his, that never got the green light. Resistance 4.
According to Price, Insomniac pitched Resistance 4 to PlayStation, and that while “it was a wonderful concept, in terms of timing and marketing opportunity, it didn’t work out.”
Resistance was a single-player FPS franchise that launched alongside the PlayStation 3 with its opening title, Resistance: Fall of Man, and from there spawned two sequels, a PlayStation Portable spin-off game, and a PlayStation Vita spin-off game. The last major Resistance game to release was Resistance 3, which launched on PS3 in 2011. Resistance: Burning Skies is technically the most recent outing for the franchise on the PS Vita.
Fans would have loved to see the franchise continue, though from the outsiders perspective, it looked like Sony and Insomniac just decided to move on, with the launch of the PS4. Price sets the record straight, that Insomniac did want to continue Resistance, things just didn’t exactly fall into place.
“It was the result of a lot of Insomniac team members being passionate about extending the story further, because I do believe that Resistance has set up a really cool alternate history base, where anything can happen with the Chimera and where they go, and what their origins are.”
“We spent a lot of time working on backstory and brainstorming on where we could take this in the future. Personally, I love the franchise, I was fortunate enough to be the creative director on the first two Resistances’ and I will remember many, many moments, good and bad, viscerally. We though a lot about how we could elevate ourselves, in some pretty difficult situations.
We love the fan response, we know that fans ask regularly if we’re going to do another Resistance, there is no answer to that, but I will say we pitched Resistance 4, and it was pretty cool.”
Of course, Price can’t exactly predict the future, so when Greg Miller followed up to ask if Price believed that Insomniac would ever return to the series, he said “I hope so.”
So do many PlayStation fans.
