Moon Studios CEO Says Sony Will Eventually Follow Microsoft And Abandon Console Exclusivity

Thomas Mahler, CEO of developer Moon Studios, has revealed in a lengthy post on X that he believes Sony will eventually wave goodbye to console exclusivity like Microsoft has with its approach to releasing its games on other formats.

Mahler argued that gaming hardware has stagnated in terms of attracting players over the past two decades, and feels that in order for the industry to grow it need to be ‘easier for everyone to access the content.’ He also feels that the entry price for new consoles is still too high.

I’d be surprised if Sony won’t end up with the same strategy. People should buy the device they like the most, but they should then have access to all the content. And yes, Nintendo will keep doing their own thing because Nintendo is Nintendo and that’s okay. Rooting for one huge corporation to sell more boxes over another strikes me as fantastically senseless – we should all just share in the love for games!

Last year Microsoft kicked off the first wave of its multiformat strategy that saw four titles come to PlayStation and Nintendo formats, including Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves. Things are set to continue this year with the release of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle for the PS5 in Spring 2025, and there’s already murmurs that Halo: The Master Chief Collection could see the light of day on the console.
