Ex-Sony Boss Ken Kutaragi Claims Everyone At The Company Thought PlayStation Would Fail

Ken Kutaragi, the former chairman and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, has claimed during the Tokyo Game Show over the weekend that everyone at Sony originally thought the PlayStation would fail.

The Father of PlayStation, who departed the hardware manufacturer in 2007 not long after the release of the PS3, looked back on his time with Sony and getting into the gaming industry back in the 1990s.

We wanted to share the passion. We wanted to hear their expectations and what they did not expect, so we wanted to hear from them. So we visited dozens of companies if not hundreds, we visited a lot of game makers. It was a great memory. They were not interested. They just said, ‘Don’t do it. There were multiple companies and none of them were successful. You are going to fail.’ That’s what they told us.

Kutaragi was instrumental in the production of the early PlayStation consoles, having overseen development of the PSOne, PS2, PSP, and PS3. After stepping down as CEO and being replaced by Kazuo Hirai (who had previously served as president of SCE America), Kutaragi assumed the role of Honorary Chairman, and later stepped down to remain as senior technology advisor.
