UK virtual reality games developer nDreams is set to lay off up to 17.5% of staff.
All of the studio’s employees were informed of the decision today, which comes following a “renewed strategic focus” at the company.
In a statement, nDreams said it had explored multiple alternatives “over many months” amid a “challenging” VR market and “tough gaming landscape”. The redundancies are said to potentially impact on levels of staff, including senior leadership.
Despite the layoffs, the studio said its upcoming titles Frenzies and Vendetta Forever are “unaffected”.
“Necessary considerations”
“Having been fully-focused on VR development since 2013, we have inevitably faced many challenges in building a modest independent studio into a world-leading VR game developer working to push both the technology and the market forward,” read a statement from nDreams.
“These necessary considerations of losing valued team members are the most difficult yet, but our belief in XR gaming is undimmed. We firmly believe that our proposed new structure will enable us to better serve current and future audiences in creating medium-defining titles for years to come.”
In November 2023, nDreams was acquired by Swedish games group Aonic for $110 million. At the time, the company said it had grown to 250 staff.
The VR developer, founded in 2006, has worked on a number of projects, including The Assembly, Far Cry VR: Dive into Insanity, Little Cities, Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, Powerwash Simulator VR, and more.
