Roger Clark Would Love To Play Arthur Morgan In A Red Dead Redemption 2 Adaptation, But Doesn’t Think He’d Be Given The Chance

We’ve been in a new era of game-to-TV/film adaptations for a few years now – which is to say, we’ve actually had some good adaptations for once.

Which is why it’s not surprising to see actors who’ve played some iconic video game roles, like Roger Clark, the actor behind Red Dead Redemption 2’s protagonist Arthur Morgan, is being asked about taking his character to TV or film.

What was more surprising was his answer, if only because of Clark’s honesty about how these things usually go. In a Gamology Q&A interview, when asked if he’d play Arthur Morgan in a TV adaptation of the game, Clark began to respond by saying “Four or five years ago, I would have said yes, absolutely.”

“But now, my opinion about it is a little more complicated. We’re starting to see more and more video game adaptations be converted to film or TV, which I think is awesome. But what I don’t think is awesome, is how the original cast never even gets acknowledged or looked at even.

I mean, we’ve seen a little bit with The Last Of Us, we got to see Troy [Baker] and Ashley [Johnson] in the TV series, I thought that was brilliant. But so often we’re not seeing the original cast even be considered, or even get an audition for these adaptations.

And one of the reasons is because of the misconception that it’s voice acting. If they had a better understanding of how much these video game actors physically inhabit the roles, I think that might change their attitude about it. I would absolutely like to play Arthur Morgan – I think I’m starting to get a little too old, now.

I think my answer to this is, Danny DeVito or we riot.”

Clark is absolutely not wrong in that the actors who play the characters we love in the games we love are almost never considered when the time comes for a TV or film adaptation, and while it may not move the needle very much it is still good to see him call it out.

An adaptation of RDR2 without Roger Clark simply wouldn’t feel right to many players – just how a God Of War adaptation without Christopher Judge in the role wouldn’t feel right.

You could even make the argument that in the case of The Last Of Us series, the only reason we saw actors from the game return in different roles or their old ones was due to Neil Druckmann’s heavy involvement.

Not all adaptations have the game director so closely tied to the creation of the film or TV show. Hopefully though if an adaptation ever does come around for RDR2, Roger Clark at least gets his chance in the audition room.
