The PS5 Has Surpassed 4 Million Units Sold In The UK, 31 Weeks Behind The PS4

In the UK alone, the PS5 has finally surpassed 4 million units sold according to GfK data. A fine enough milestone for regional console sales that is admittedly soured by the fact that the PS4 was able to reach the same milestone 31 weeks faster than the PS5.

Compared to every other home console since the days of the original PlayStation, it is the fifth-fastest to reach 4 million units sold, having done so in 192 weeks.

Filling out the rest of the top five is the PS1 which hit 4 million in 182 weeks, then the PS4 at 161 weeks, then the PS2 at 114 weeks, and the fastest to reach 4 million was the Nintendo Wii, which reached that mark in just 102 weeks.

To be fair to the PS5, for every other console before it they were all coming in at a lower price point, and each of them had had price reductions – not price increases – by the time they had been on the market for four years.

The higher something costs, the more someone is likely to hesitate before buying it – which makes sense, of course, and that common sense is why GfK’s Dorian Bloch highlights it when speaking to GamesIndustry.Biz about the PS5’s slower march towards 4 million.

“The days of razors and razorblades when consoles sold at almost impulse-purchase price points, are over. Either from launch or by heavy price reductions over time – Wii, PS1, PS2, and Xbox 360 – all had low cumulative average selling prices by the time they reached 4 million units.”
