PS5 Was The Best-Selling Console In The US For May 2024, Continues To Out-Pace PS4 Sales
The PS5 was the best-selling console in the US in terms of both unit and dollar sales for May 2024, continuing its streak of being the best-selling console month after month.
The Nintendo Switch placed second, while Xbox Series consoles once again came in third, but at least this month Xbox Series consoles came second in terms of dollar sales.
Circana analyst and executive director Mat Piscatella published the numbers for sales in May 2024 as he consistently does every month, and along with tracking the top-selling console, he also revealed that the PS5 continues to out-pace the PS4 in terms of its console sales over the same time period.
“Through each console’s first 43 months in market, PlayStation 5 unit sales lead those of PlayStation 4 by 8%, while Xbox Series trails Xbox One by 13% and remains slightly behind Xbox 360,” Piscatella posted.
It’s good news for PlayStation that it remains the best-selling console, though the feeling of this win is lessened by the fact that Piscatella also reports overall hardware spending in the US was down 40% compared to May 2023.
“May video game hardware spending declined 40% when compared to a year ago, to $202M, and is now 30% lower YTD. Through May, all current generation hardware platforms are showing double-digit percentage declines year-on-year in 2024, with Switch showing the most significant drop,” said Piscatella.
Elsewhere in hardware sales, the PlayStation Portal continues its run of selling far more than anyone could’ve predicted. It was the best-selling accessory in dollar sales for May 2024 and remains the best-selling accessory in dollar sales of 2024 so far.
