Overwatch 2 Really Is Done With PvE, According To New Report

Remember how Blizzard announced last year it would no longer be delivering certain PvE content in its free-to-play shooter Overwatch 2? Well, in a new Bloomberg report from Jason Schreier, it’s been revealed the “majority” of the team behind the PvE story content was laid off in January.

Blizzard’s paid PvE content last year (which contained three story missions) apparently “sold poorly”, according to Schreier. As a result of this, there are no longer plans to finish the remaining PvE content, with the team now doubling down on competitive PvP.

In an update last May, the Overwatch 2 executive producer admitted the team would be unable to deliver on the original vision for PvE that was originally showcased in 2019. At this point, it’s not all that surprising to hear PvE is no longer part of the plan, but it’s still unfortunate when it was used as one of the main selling points, prior to launch.

The same source also notes how the developers of Overwatch 2 got a “stunning 0% of profit-sharing bonuses this month”, which is “rare at Blizzard” but followed reports of the title’s “poor financial performance” in the first half of last year.

In somewhat related news, Blizzard earlier this week announced heroes would no longer be unlocked through the battle pass in Overwatch 2, which could potentially make it a lot more accessible to newcomers going forward.
