Google Engineers Hack PlayStation Portal To Play PSP Games Offline

The PlayStation Portal has been hacked by a group of Google engineers to allow the device to run PSP games.

PS Portal launched late last year and is a companion device for the PS5, allowing you to stream content from your console to the handheld, which is effectively a DualSense controller with a screen plonked in the middle. The PS Portal uses Sony’s Remote Play feature, which was also utilised by the PS Vita to allow you to stream PS4 games to the device.

Andy Nguyen, a vulnerability research for Google Cloud, has revealed that a small team has now managed to hack PS Portal to play games locally. This has resulted in them being able to install the PSPPP emulator to run PSP Games natively without having to connect to the Internet and stream content.

The hack was achieved on a software level, says Nguyen, which means the team didn’t tamper with the PS Portal hardware at all. They also confirmed there’s no plans to release the hack.
