Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty Sold Over 5 Million Units In 2023

For years in games the biggest ‘redemption arc’ story was considered to be No Man’s Sky, a game which went from an absolutely abysmal launch to one of the biggest games around in half a decade.

Now however that crown could arguably go to Cyberpunk 2077, which in three years time has been able to turn things around, so much that its only DLC expansion Phantom Liberty has sold more than 5 million units in 2023.

Quite the feat, considering the expansion only released in September 2023, so it made all those sales in the last three months of the year. Of course though it also helps that the holiday season was on deck by the time Phantom Liberty launched.

CD Projekt RED announced the news on Twitter, thanking players for diving into Phantom Liberty’s setting, Dogtown, and what many fans consider to be the best narrative journey available across Cyberpunk 2077.

At the end of November 2023, CD Projekt RED revealed that Phantom Liberty had already hit 4.3 million in sales, so that it nearly sold another million in just one more month practically shows just how far along Cyberpunk 2077 has come in the eyes of players.

It’s also worth noting that Cyberpunk 2077’s massive, game-changing 2.0 update played a huge role in an influx of new and returning players all finding more reasons to pick up the controller and jump back into Night City and Dogtown.

Even if it took CD Projekt RED three years after the original launch date of Cyberpunk 2077, it’s great to see a game that players waited years for has finally delivered the experience players wanted from the start.

It would be best though to not have to see redemption stories like this, and games arriving complete and not in such a state like Cyberpunk 2077 was when it launched, though that’s perhaps a bit optimistic.
